ABOUT
SARAH MATTHEWS
Sarah Matthews is a mixed media artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout her practice, she has considered how the meaning and value of material objects change depending on their context, particularly in regards to items we collect and those we discard. Previous bodies of work have explored this concept through the use of found objects, food waste and more.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Collected and discarded materials absorb something inherently human. Temporal objects gain value from their context, only to become seemingly worthless once discarded. The act of collecting elevates and redefines these materials, bringing them closer to us. This truth extends to the objects we discard – each plastic takeout container, for instance, once held nourishment, albeit temporarily.
In my artwork, I employ a mixture of discarded plastics, papers, Styrofoam, and playful craft materials like pipe cleaners, cotton balls, and string. This fusion reflects both my commitment to sustainability and an embrace of the childlike joy found in arts and crafts. It speaks to my personal connection to the work, revealing insights into my collection habits that fill corners in both my home and memory.
Through the transformative process of printmaking, I distort and re-imagine these objects, granting them new contexts and meanings. It's an act of allowing these materials one more incarnation, breathing fresh life into them and inviting viewers to reconsider their intrinsic value and potential.
